How To Install A Wireless Doorbell

Now before we get into this blog, let us preface it with this: A wireless doorbell might sound like one of those “unnecessary advancements” in technology, but there are practical reasons for installing one in your home. Convenience is, of course, the first and biggest reason to get a wireless doorbell system. You can adjust volume levels, place the receiver wherever you want, and move it whenever you need, all with no ugly wires running on your walls or wires being run through them. If that doesn’t do it for you, then think about how great it would be if you could see whoever was outside your door on a screen that you’re already looking at. Certain doorbell models will have security cameras on them which will allow a live view of the outside of your house, and also double as a security function. Now that’s cool!

Now that we’ve made you want a wireless doorbell let’s talk about installing yours!

Step 1 – Turn off the Electricity

We’re about to be touching wires, so make sure they’re not live when you do! Head to your breaker box and turn off the appropriate area.

Step 2 – Removing the Existing Doorbell Button

Get out your screwdriver; we’re taking off your doorbell! You might be able to see the mounting screws holding the doorbell button in place. If so you can simply unscrew them and pull the casing off. If they’re not readily visible, remove the cap covering the button and you should find them.

Carefully unscrew and remove the casing from the doorknob button and away from the wall. Use a voltage tester to verify that the wires here are shut off.

Disconnect the wires from the current button, and use a piece of masking tape to pin the wires to the inside of the wall and prevent them from falling into the wall cavity.

Step 3 – Sync Your Doorbell

Pull out your shiny new doorbell. There are two primary components to a wireless doorbell: the transmitter and the receiver. Depending on the model you have, you may have multiple receivers, and maybe even be able to download an app for the camera. Take some time to sync the transmitter to the receiver, get your app set up, and get ready to install the hardware.

Step 4 – Install Your Doorbell!

Your transmitter (the doorbell button) will come with either double sided tape or screws to attach it to the wall.

If it’s double sided tape, then this is the easiest install you’ve ever done. Simply clean the area with a damp cloth, dry it, apply the tape to the transmitter, and stick it on the wall. Use a level and a light pencil mark to guarantee a straight install, and you’re done!

If you received a few screws, break out the screwdriver and screw it onto the wall. No problem! If your kit came with multiple transmitters, then place each one on a separate door.

Now head inside and make sure your receiver is where you want it and plugged in (or the batteries are installed). If you need to mount it, follow the same advice as above to mount it to a wall or ceiling in a place that looks good (or hidden if it doesn’t!).

Step 5 – Test Your Doorbell

Once everything is hooked up, plugged in, and turned on, give it a test! If it’s not working, make sure to comb through the instruction manual for things you might have missed. Some models come with synchronous codes that need to be input to both the transmitter and receiver before it will work. This is a nice feature that will help eliminate interference from the neighbors.

Step 6 – Maintain

If you ever need to move the receiver, you may need to pair it again with the transmitter. Likewise, when changing the batteries in either the transmitter or receivers, re-pairing might need to happen. Other than that, there should be very little upkeep with your new doorbell.

Wrap Up

That’s it, and it’s really that easy! Enjoy your new wireless doorbell and be sure to leave us a comment if you have any questions. Thanks for reading!
