How to Choose a Neutral Color Palette for Your Nursery

Neutral colors are all the rage right now, and if you’re painting your nursery for the first (or second!) time then we’ve got some options for you! Going away from the traditional pink/blue walls in a nursery has been an emerging trend for many years now. If you’re looking to paint without learning the gender of the baby before they arrive, or simply want a modern look, then neutrals are the way to go.

Why Neutral?

Neutral colors have been a dominating trend lately. Using neutrals as a backsplash for your room allows any colors you do place in there (cribs, toys, trimming, fabrics, etc.) to stand out from the scenery. Should you go crazy with your nursery walls with murals or the like, then a neutral color will allow that to pop.

Neutral colors also allow natural light to play with the space in ways that bright and in your face colors don’t.

Reds, Yellows, Greens, and even lighter shades of “typical” nursery blues and pinks can play a large role in bringing the life to your nursery. But where do you even begin picking colors?

Where to Begin?

Neutral colors are easy to look through, but how do you choose? Where does the inspiration come from?

Inspiration can be found anywhere in the world if you’re looking close enough. Perhaps your favorite storybook, a view of the outside from your nursery window, or favorite artwork will give you the spark you need to find it. Following the latest color trends, such as the Ben Moore Color Trends is a great way to find inspiration in the newest and most exciting areas.

A great place to start is choosing a crib with bedding or fabric that you love. What will provide your little bundle of joy a charming place to rest? Don’t be afraid to build around a piece you love. In the end, you will only wind up loving it more!

Find your centerpiece, and build a palette around it. Whether your centerpiece is a crib, blanket, tree on the wall, painting, or otherwise, the focal point will give you an excellent idea of what colors to build around it. If your center point is a neutral color, you can try to find other neutrals that fill in around it for the main walls, but use the trim as a place to accentuate. If your primary color is a bright, popping color (or a dark, saturated hue) then you should fill in neutrals around it and allow it the chance it needs to breathe its own life.

Accent colors need not be steeped in neutrals either. If you find a complimentary accent color that is outside the realm of neutral, experiment with it!

Don’t be afraid to get in there with swatches, chips, and test paints. Experiment, play w3ith the color, let the light hit it from a bunch of different angles and see what looks good and what doesn’t. With (hopefully) months to go, you should have time to play around! If you don’t have time to play around, then you should get into your Local Koopman Lumber store and talk to one of our trained paint employees.
